THE BUFFALO ZOO

The 716 Foundation is a proud supporter of one of Western New York's longest standing nonprofit institutions. The Buffalo Zoo is one of the oldest zoos in the country. Since 1875 the animal conservation efforts at The Buffalo Zoo have provided its guests access to an educational outing that is fun for the whole family.

Not surprisingly, the Bison Exhibit is a fan favorite at the zoo. For years, a twenty-nine year old bison named Wilma, which is the oldest bison currently in captivity, has been the only bison at the exhibit. Her longevity is a testament to the care The Buffalo Zoo provides to its inhabitants. When 716 Foundation began discussions with the zoo about a partnership, we stressed our interest in bringing more bison to the zoo and providing Wilma some much needed company.

On November 25, 2022, The Buffalo Zoo held a ribbon cutting ceremony for the new Bison Exhibit. The 716 Foundation was a lead sponsor for the exhibit's renovations. Most notable was a new viewing platform for guests and a chute that allows the zookeepers access to the Bison for health checks, without the need for sedation. As part of 716 Foundation’s donation the zoo was able to bring three new bison to the exhibit. As a thank you, The Buffalo Zoo asked 716 Foundation to name the new bison. We are thrilled Caroline, Dolores, and Susan are young, healthy and have given Wilma a new outlook on life.

716 Foundation understands The Buffalo Zoo is not an option for everyone due to the cost of admission. In spring 2023, 716 Foundation will unveil our program that will provide access to the zoo by subsidizing the cost of tickets. We hope this will allow everyone the opportunity to go and meet the three newest members of the zoo.
